Coarsening in Nonlocal Interfacial Systems

چکیده

We consider coarsening in interfacial systems driven by nonlocal energies. Of particular interest are the nonlocal Cahn–Hilliard equation and models of biological aggregation. The energies considered cause the system to separate into phases. The pattern of interfaces evolves under nonlocal surfacetension-type effects. The typical length scales grow and the pattern coarsens. We prove a rigorous upper bound on the coarsening rate. The proof uses the energy-based approach to estimates on rate of coarsening introduced by Kohn and Otto [10]. To show the required estimates on the flatness of the energy landscape we develop a geometric approach which is applicable to a wider class of problems, which includes ones based on local, gradient type energies.

Thermodynamically driven incompressible fluid mixtures

We compare two models describing the dynamics of phase separation of incompressible mixtures: A local model proposed by de Gennes, and a nonlocal model proposed by E and Palffy-Muhoray. We find that in the interfacial regime, the local model gives rise to interfacial motion via the Mullins-Sekerka law for moderate quenches, and surface diffusion for deep quenches. The interface dynamics is slow...

On the Coarsening Rates for Attachment-Limited Kinetics

We study the coarsening rates for attachment-limited kinetics which is modeled by nonlocal mean-curvature flow. Attachment-limited kinetics is observed during solidification processes, in which the system is divided into two domains of the two pure phases, more precisely islands of a solid phase surrounded by an undercooled liquid phase, and the relaxation process is due to material redistribut...

Surface morphology coarsening in a nonlocal system

Direct comparison is made of the steady-sates and coarsening dynamics in a local system and its nonlocal generalization. The example system is the surface of a solid film in a strong electric field; the morphological evolution of the surface is described, in the long-wavelength approximation, by the amplitude PDE for the film height function. It is shown that the amplitude of the steady-state a...

Upper Bounds on Coarsening Rates in Demixing Binary Viscous Liquids

We consider the demixing process of a binary mixture of two liquids after a temperature quench. Thermodynamics favors two domains of the two different equilibrium volume fractions with a characteristic interfacial layer. After an initial stage, the dynamics are thus driven by the reduction of the interfacial area. Therefore in large systems, one observes an increase in the typical length scale ...
